Umbrella is a light orange color with a white head and medium carbonation. This has a strong grapefruit hop aroma with some grassy notes. This is brewed with only Ella hops, an Australian variety, which puts a refreshingly unusual spin on the hop profile. This is a lighter IPA in character, just slightly more bold than your average pale ale. But it is well-balanced with just a slight curve ball on the hop taste.

I liked that you focused on a Brewpub this time. I probably won't get to this one but I have been to a few and I do agree that many Brewpubs do somewhat brew to a "least common denominator" meaning that their brews, though very well made, are often more toward the middle of the road of a style and less toward the extremes. Some, however, do a great job making excellent to awesome beers that can move more toward the extreme and extremely tasty beers like Karl Strauss in San Diego, Hop Valley in Springfield, OR and Barley Johns or Day Block in MN.

I tend to agree, though what Pelican did with the beers we had was very un-Oregonian of them. While 2014 was the year of the Double and Triple IPA, and 2015 was the year of the sour, I predict 2016 will be the year of the "tropical" hop IPA. I think Pelican is one of the breweries setting the trend and I bet many will follow in the near future.
