You discussion of the best time to drink this was spot on. Except for the explosion of hops in your mouth, this really is more of an old ale or Barleywine best enjoyed in a snifter on a cold night in front of a fire. The snifter allows the hop aroma to shine and prepare you for the up front hop overload before getting to the warming effect of the high ABV.
